OAU to Join ASUU Strike After Exam

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU will join the nationwide strike declared by the national body of the union through its President, Dr. Nasir Fagge over alleged Federal Government's refusal to implement the agreement between ASUU and FG over unpaid entitlements.

Daily Trust correspondent gathered that the OAU Ile-Ife chapter of ASUU will join the strike but students of the university who are currently writing their examinations would be allowed to complete their exams without distractions.

Some OAU lecturers who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity said the academic staff in the university will honour the strike and join as soon as the students complete their examinations which are almost finished.

"We shall join the nationwide indefinite strike declared by ASUU national body since the Federal Government has reneged on the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed with ASUU in 2009 to pay lecturers their EARN allowances."

It would be recalled that, Federal Government, in 2009 signed an agreement to pay each lecturer N12,500 per month as EARN allowance, which it has not done since then.

Meanwhile, there are indications that the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology owned by government of Osun and Oyo states may also be affected by the ongoing ASUU strike as activities billed for today in the institution were suddenly cancelled.

Among the event cancelled in the university is the inauguration of the governing council of the university which was supposed to hold yesterday.

Sources said the cancellation was not unconnected with the ASUU Strike.
